Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy analysis of siddha mineral drug “Velvanga parpam”
Main Article Content
Abstract
Siddha system of medicine is one of the ancient and unique systems of medicine in India. Various ingredients like herbs, minerals, metals, live and waste product of creatures are used to make medicine in siddha system. Among the Siddha drugs, Velvanga Parpam which is indicated for heamorrhoids (moolam), mentioned in the Siddha literature “Akathiyar Paripooranam -400. The main objective of the present study was to standardize the Siddha herbal drug Velvanga Parpam by using FTIR Spectroscopic analysis. FTIR study reveals the different characteristic peak values with various functional compounds present in the drug. The result of the study shows that the presence of functional groups ensures that it has anti inflammatory, analgesic, antiseptic, antimicrobial, anti oxidant, anti cancer, Laxative, wound healing, sympathetic stimulant, antifungal and anti bacterial activities. Further researches want to be done in the Velvanga Parpam to prove the efficacy and standardization of the drug.
