Abstract

Background :

Purification or suddhi is a unique process in siddha which is employed to remove the toxic fractions and to enhance activity of the raw drugs. Silasathu a mineral drug known as gypsum is used extensively in various siddha formulations, with various therapeutic significances. Siddha system recommends the administration of raw drugs only after suddhi in different formulations.

Objective :

To explore the morphology of raw silasathu (SS) and purified silasathu (PS) by FTIR and TG analysis.

Materials and methods :

Hence in this pretext one of the purification process of silasathu mentioned in the book Marunthu sei iyalum kalaiyum[1] get validated scientifically through FT- IR and thermogravimetry ( TG) studies.

Results :

The FTIR results shows the observed O-H ,C-H stretch, C=C, Aromatic, CH2 stretch, CH3 stretch, C-O-C, C-OH, C-OH and C-Cl molecular fragments which indicates  that the presence of  following functional groups  alcohol& phenol, alkane, terminal alkynes, ether, tertiary alcohol, alkyl halide. : In FTIR studies showed that markedly increase values after purification. These studies highlight the application using modern standardizing techniques for bringing the raw drug into the purified drug into focus.

Conclusion:

All the modern scientific parameters provide it is minimal size particles and good characteristic nature of the drug. So, purified silasathu is used in the making of  high efficacy therapeutic drugs.
